Tobacco products contain unsafe substances, from acetone and tar to nicotine and carbon monoxide. The inhaled substances can affect your lungs and the other organs in your body.
A note from Cleveland ClinicNicotine poisoning is on the rise, mostly due to the availability of some of the newer forms of nicotine that are now popular. Children eat cigarettes and can be accidentally poisoned by touching, tasting or swallowing liquid nicotine or liquid nicotine-containing products used in e-cigarettes. To keep you and your family and pets safe from nicotine poisoning, the most effective approach would be to eliminate or ban tobacco-containing or nicotine-containing products in your home. If you're interested in quitting smoking, your healthcare team is here, ready and looking forward to helping you. All tobacco products contain nicotine and are harmful to your health. All are technically capable of causing poisoning if taken in large enough quantities.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) and other vapor products are used to heat and aerosolize (turn into particles) liquid known as e-juice (vape juice) containing highly addictive nicotine or other substances that a person can inhale into their lungs.
Parents and anti-tobacco groups immediately criticized the decision, which follows years of advocacy efforts to keep menthol and other flavors that can appeal to teens off the market. The FDA said it authorized four menthol e-cigarettes from Njoy, the vaping brand recently acquired by tobacco giant Altria, which also sells Marlboro cigarettes. This is in contrast to passive smoking (secondhand smoke), which is known to be very harmful to health.
Any product that does not submit an application by this deadline must be removed from the marketplace, which if properly enforced, could lead a significantly smaller marketplace. The main component of e-cigarettes is the e-liquid contained in cartridges or tanks. To create an e-liquid, nicotine is extracted from tobacco and mixed with a base (usually propylene glycol), and may also include flavorings, colorings and other chemicals (such as formaldehyde and acrolein, which can cause irreversible lung damage). The American Lung Association is very concerned that we are at risk of losing another generation to tobacco-caused diseases as the result of e-cigarettes.
In addition to these laws, e-cigarettes are prohibited from being used in child care facilities, and people purchasing tobacco products have to pay a 15 percent tax. While not all the effects of smoking are immediate, the complications and damage can last for years. The good news is that quitting smoking can reduce many risk factors for the conditions and diseases below. For a long time, e-cigarettes and other electronic aerosolizers weren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They only came under the purview of the FDA in 2016, after they had been on the market for nearly a decade.
Others can be refilled with liquid, recharged, and used over and over. Our Board of Health is a leader in protecting people from the dangers of e-cigarettes and vapor products. They found that the amounts of nicotine in the blood were similar between the two groups after 10 minutes of smoking at a constant rate. The flavoring liquid for electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease when inhaled, according to a study led by researchers at the School of Medicine. My reading of the evidence is that smokers who switch to vaping remove almost all the risks smoking poses to their health. Smokers differ in their needs and I would advise them not to give up on e-cigarettes if they do not like the first one they try. It may take some experimentation with different products and e-liquids to find the right one. An expert independent evidence review published today by Public Health England (PHE) concludes that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful to health than tobacco and have the potential to help smokers quit smoking.
To date, FDA has authorized 34 tobacco- and menthol-flavored e-cigarette products and devices. These products have undergone rigorous scientific review, including toxicologic assessments, and have been found by FDA to meet the statutory public health standard. Vaping is often thought of as safer than cigarette smoking, but vaping causes health problems, too.
Vaping has exploded into a national crisis, and tobacco companies are helping to fuel it by targeting kids with flavors such as gummy bear and cotton candy. E-cigarette companies have promoted unsubstantiated health claims about their products as healthier than traditional cigarettes, when, in fact, e-cigarettes are uniquely dangerous for kids due to nicotine’s impact on their developing brains. Since being introduced to the U.S. market in 2007, e-cigarette use among youth has increased to epidemic levels (Surgeon General's Advisory on E-cigarette Use Among Youth, 2018). The availability of flavored e-cigarettes is one of the most commonly cited reasons for e-cigarette use among youth (Tsai et al., 2018). Given the importance of flavors contributing to use of e-cigarettes among youth, these data briefs build on this previously published article, providing an update on trends in unit sales of e-cigarettes in the U.S. by product and flavor type.
Studies have found that nearly two-thirds of adult e-cigarette users plan to quit, and almost a quarter of adolescents want to quit and have made a quit attempt. ] have been offset by the increasing consumption in low income countries, especially China. The Chinese market now consumes more cigarettes than all other low- and middle-income countries combined. Levels of naphthalene were slightly higher than those of pyrene in e-cigarette emissions, while the respective air blank was lower. Nevertheless, it seems likely that these compounds were detected in e-cigarette emissions due to their presence as low-level contaminants in the background air, rather than originating from the vaping product. E-cigarettes are devices that use an electric battery to heat up a liquid (commonly called an "e-liquid") into an aerosol, which the user inhales. Vitamin E acetate, diacetyl, formaldehyde, and acrolein are just a few among hundreds of potentially hazardous substances commonly found in e-liquids and their aerosols.
In contrast, other studies found acute microvascular endothelial dysfunction, increased oxidative stress and arterial stiffness in smokers after exposure to e-cigarettes with nicotine, but not after e-cigarettes without nicotine (reviewed in [20]). In women smokers, a study found a significant difference in stiffness after smoking just one tobacco cigarette, but not after use of e-cigarettes (reviewed in [20]). However, research updates on, and analysis of, the potential health benefits/risks of e-cigarettes are outside the scope of TobaccoTactics. These devices come in a variety of shapes and sizes, as pictured below, with several different names. Some e-cigarettes look like regular cigarettes, but many resemble pens or USB flash drives, and are not recognized as tobacco products. Larger e-cigarettes such as tank systems, or "mods," do not resemble other tobacco products.

Death from nicotine poisoning is not common in adults because of their larger body size. However, using more than one type of nicotine-containing product at the same time can increase your risk. As the name suggests, cigalike kits are designed to look and feel like tobacco cigarettes. Cigarette-style vape kits are easy to use and, rather than being refillable, take prefilled flavour cartridges known as cartomizers or refills.
WHO regularly monitors and reviews the evidence on ENDS and health and offers guidance to governments. "Yale physicians have been at the forefront in identifying EVALI cases," Dr. Weiss says. She explains that even before CDC guidelines on treating the illness were released, Yale doctors were successfully treating patients with a combination of antibiotics and steroids. Doctors at Yale Medicine also collaborate with researchers in the fields of tobacco and addiction medicine to provide care for patients with EVALI.
This means that e-cigarettes cannot be used in areas where smoking is banned. Patients affected by the disease have symptoms ranging from cough, chest pain, and shortness of breath to fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and fever. Since the initial outbreak, federal and state officials have reported thousands of cases and dozens of deaths related to EVALI. Ventilation, filtration and air cleaning techniques may reduce harmful substances released from e-cigarette use indoors but are not likely to eliminate them. Learn more about e-cigarette aerosol from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The FDA faced a self-imposed court deadline at the end of this month to wrap up its yearslong review of major vaping brands, including Juul and Vuse.

The FDA must act without further delay to remove all flavored e-cigarettes from the market. CDC recommends you not use e-cigarettes or vapor products, especially those with THC. Fewer Pierce County youth are smoking cigarettes in recent years, but more are vaping. The main ingredient in vapes is propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine or glycerol, and almost all vapes contain nicotine, flavours and other chemicals.
E-liquid physical properties are also important in carbonyl formation15,47,84,86. The viscosity and density of the e-liquid determine its mobility, capillary action, and delivery to the wick and coil, influencing the likelihood of a dry puff15. Sub-ohm vapes (sometimes called cloud kits) are more advanced vaping devices that are capable of outputting huge amounts of power; if you’ve ever noticed someone exhaling gigantic clouds from their kit, they were probably using one of these! Using a sub-ohm device requires a working knowledge of battery safety and Ohm’s Law, so it’s best to do some reading before investing in one. "India should be taking lessons from the West where vaping has become an epidemic. Claims that e-cigarettes aid cessation is a big lie, rather they are gateway devices.
Upon entering the blood, nicotine stimulates the adrenal glands to release the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline). Epinephrine stimulates the central nervous system and increases blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate. As with most addictive substances, nicotine activates the brain’s reward circuits and also increases levels of a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine, which reinforces rewarding behaviors. Pleasure caused by nicotine’s interaction with the reward circuit motivates some people to use nicotine again and again, despite risks to their health and well-being. First PuffsThe current iteration of e-cigarettes was invented and popularized by Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik in 2003 and entered the U.S. market some seven years ago. The 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, released in November by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US Food and Drug Administration, found that about 2.1 million middle and high school students were e-cigarette users. Get more information on small cell lung cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and the diagnosis of lung cancer stages. Also, "it is clear from the scientific literature that a variety of toxic compounds besides nicotine are present in aerosolized e-liquid," the researchers added. These chemicals have been linked to lung inflammation, chronic coughs, shortness of breath and lung disease.
E-cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, vapes, vape pens, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), are experiencing rapid growth in popularity, especially among teens and young adults. They come in a variety of forms, sometimes looking like USB flash drives, pens, and other items that make them hard for parents and teachers to spot. Other electronic devices that heat tobacco instead of liquid nicotine, such as IQOS, are not considered e-cigarettes. Teens cannot participate in such studies, but "we all agree that e-cigs are not a good thing for youth and nonsmokers," Dr. Baldassarri says. The Food and Drug Administration on Friday authorized the first menthol-flavored electronic cigarettes for adult smokers, acknowledging that vaping flavors can reduce the harms of traditional tobacco smoking.
Fetal exposure to e-cigarettes can adversely affect the development of the fetus in pregnant women. Exposure to emissions from e-cigarettes also poses risks to bystanders. E-cigarettes may help nonpregnant adults quit smoking cigarettes if they are used as a complete substitute for all smoked tobacco products. However, e-cigarettes are not currently approved by the FDA to help people quit smoking. If you are using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation, it is important to make a plan to quit vaping.
However, the state's largely rural landscape and small population could be partly to blame for its high youth vaping rate. About 80 percent of Wyoming's residents live in rural areas, as much of the land area is used for farming and national parks. Researchers combed through state-by-state data from the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, an advocacy group aimed at stopping youth smoking. Since 2020, emergency department visits in Virginia by patients who said they vape jumped significantly, while visits by those who use traditional tobacco declined, according to stats from Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.
A 2021 review found people who used e-cigarettes to quit smoking, as well as having expert face-to-face support, can be up to twice as likely to succeed as people who used other nicotine replacement products, such as patches or gum. Vaping involves using a device known as an e-cigarette—also called a vape pen, mod, or tank—to heat up a small amount of liquid, turning it into a vapor that can be inhaled. Most vape liquids contain substances such as propylene glycol and glycerol as base ingredients that create the vapor.
The e-liquid is quickly heated and converted to an aerosol that can be inhaled into the lungs. As smoking has declined dramatically in the U.S., vaping has gained tremendous popularity very quickly. A 2018 study reported 20% of high schoolers vaped at least once in the past 30 days. Since e-cigarettes often contain the same chemicals as traditional cigarettes, smoke produced by vaping may be toxic to people nearby. Manufacturers claim that e-cigarettes bypass many of the health risks of tobacco smoking, providing a healthful alternative.

If you think you have had an adverse effect from using a vape or have a safety concern, you can report it via the Yellow Card Scheme website.
Carbonyls in cigarette smoke are formed mainly by pyrolysis of tobacco sugars83, whereas those in e-cigarettes are formed mainly by thermal degradation of PG and/or VG83,84,85. Flavourings may also contribute to the formation of carbonyls, as well as the characteristics of the e-cigarette devices, especially the applied voltage, coil resistance and wicking material47,48,49,86,87. Poor wicking efficiency may lead to a dry wick and overheated e-liquid (dry puff), which promotes the formation of carbonyls and other toxic compounds2,10,13,15. Coil location, orientation, resistance and wick material, as well as power output, have been shown to affect carbonyl generation significantly13,15,86.
Vaping can cause eye, throat, and nose irritation, as well as irritation in the respiratory tract. The nicotine in e-cigarettes can cause dizziness and nausea, especially in new users. E-cigarettes contain many of the same toxins as regular cigarettes, but they may have smaller amounts. Some brands also have much less nicotine than regular cigarettes or no nicotine at all. Their brains are still developing and forming the structure and connections necessary for the mature behavior of adulthood.
Restrictions on importation, packaging and flavourings will come into effect in early 2024 (TGA 2023). Between 2012 and 2022, most Australian jurisdictions have amended their laws to further restrict the advertising and sale of e‑cigarettes (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023b). Recent reports have linked serious lung injury – and even deaths – to vaping. According to the CDC, cigarette smoking causes nearly 1 out of every five deaths in the United States. It’s possible that we don’t yet know all the physical effects of vaping. Numerous studies have been performed to evaluate the safety/toxicity of e-cigarette use both in vivo and in in vitro cell culture.
No amount of nicotine is safe for youth as there may be long-term, damaging effects on learning, memory, attention, behavior problems, and future addiction. Electronic cigarettes or vapes (referred to collectively as ‘e‑cigarettes’) are personal vaping devices where users inhale aerosol rather than smoke. The inhaled aerosol usually contains flavourings, a range of toxic chemicals, and may contain nicotine as well (Department of Health and Aged Care 2023a).
Vaping can cause breathing problems, organ damage, addiction and other conditions. Lots of people want to know about the health effects of e-cigarettes. They’re still a relatively new product, so it’s too soon to know for sure. This is because e-cigarettes don’t contain cancer-causing tobacco, and most of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes are not in e-cigarettes. High rates of vaping are "especially concerning given the rate of youth and young adults using these products," she said in a university news release.

Usually the explosions are caused by faulty batteries or because the batteries were not handled as they should be. Visit the Food and Drug Administration website for safety tips to help avoid an e-cigarette battery explosion. Among people who were hospitalized with severe EVALI, most were younger than 35 and used THC-containing vapes from informal sources (online, family or friends). However, EVALI can happen in anyone using either nicotine or THC-containing vapes.
Children and adults can develop nicotine poisoning from swallowing, breathing, or absorbing e-liquid through their skin or eyes. E-cigarette use can also result in serious injury due to defective batteries that have caused fires and explosions. Vaping and smoking both involve inhaling nicotine and other substances into the lungs. While cigarettes burn tobacco that produces smoke, e-cigarettes heat liquid to make an aerosol that often contains nicotine, various chemicals, heavy metals (nickel, tin, and lead) and small particles that can be inhaled deeply into the lungs.
Despite this trend all current evidence finds that e-cigarettes carry a fraction of the risk of smoking. The 966 respondents who had never vaped more often believed that e-cigarette waste was dangerous to throw in trash compared to the 1,083 respondents who had vaped at least once (81.4% vs. 71%). Fewer of those who had vaped at least once (79.3%) believed that e-cigarettes contained toxic substances compared to those who had never vaped (89.6%). Young respondents clearly recognized the dangers of e-cigarette waste to humans and the environment and want an appropriate method to recycle.
This guidance is intended to support healthcare providers in their understanding and tracking of -cigarette and vaping product use. 20% (5 million) of all youth use e-cigarettes, a 135% increase in just two years. Additional data, rates and trends can be found in the American Lung Association’s Tobacco Trends Brief.
Experimenting with different ways of using vaping materials may be additionally risky. In addition, nicotine use can affect areas of a young person’s brain that are responsible for attention and learning. Primary spontaneous pneumothorax, or collapsed lung, occurs when there’s a hole in the lung through which oxygen escapes.
FDA regulates the manufacture, import, packaging, labeling, advertising, promotion, sale, and distribution of ENDS, including components and parts of ENDS but excluding accessories. An outbreak of EVALI in late 2019 and early 2020 put thousands of people in the hospital. Since then, EVALI cases have been declining, but people who vape can still get EVALI. Research from the CDC shows that vaping among youth has declined somewhat since 2020.
To date, no e-cigarette product has been approved by the FDA for smoking cessation. In contrast, nicotine replacement therapies (e.g., patch, gum, lozenge) and some prescription medications (i.e., varenicline, bupropion) have been evaluated by the FDA and found to be safe and effective at helping people quit smoking. Manufacturers and sellers of e-cigarettes aggressively target young people.
Many are already working on efforts to combat this crisis, and we now ask for redoubled efforts and increased coordination. Below are recommended actions that different groups can take to address this issue. Cross-tabulations and Pearson χ2-tests were conducted with IBM SPSS 27.0, and multilevel logistic regression analyses with MlwiN 3.05. The associations between the student- and school-level independent variables and S-SM, S-EC, and S-SN were tested with two-level logistic regression models, with students on level one and schools on level two. The estimation procedure in the random intercept models was second-order predictive quasi-likelihood (PQL2). Analyses were stratified by gender due to significant interactions between gender and educational aspirations for all three outcomes in the unadjusted analyses.
We also have leading brands of e-liquid from some of the biggest manufacturers in the UK. So, if you feel like trying more than one, make sure you check out our multi-buy deals. Unlike cigarette butts, e-cigarette waste won’t biodegrade even under severe conditions. E-cigarettes left on the street eventually break down into microplastics and chemicals that flow into the storm drains to pollute our waterways and wildlife.
One study detected vitamin E acetate in the lung fluid of 48 out of 51 EVALI patients sampled across 16 states. By contrast, lung fluid samples taken from healthy people did not contain the vitamin. EVALI is a serious medical condition in which a person’s lungs become damaged from substances contained in e-cigarettes and vaping products. The smoke-free and tobacco-free policies at schools, businesses, healthcare institutions, and other organizations should also cover e-cigarettes. This will help non-users avoid being exposed to potentially harmful e-cigarette aerosol.
Once discarded into the environment, the filters create a large waste problem. Synthetic particulate filters may remove some of the tar before it reaches the smoker. The data underlying this article cannot be shared publicly due to the privacy of individuals that participated in the study.
Despite being marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes contain numerous harmful substances such as formaldehyde, heavy metals, and carcinogens, he added. Part of the difficulty in curbing youth e-cigarette use has been the intensity of the industry’s marketing towards kids, particularly through social media influencers, said Bianco. In the 2021 Youth National Tobacco Survey, 73.5% of youth that use social media reported seeing e-cigarette–related content.
Long periods of dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes can result in harms to health similar to, or in addition to, the harms from exclusive use of cigarettes. Nicotine is the primary agent in regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and it is highly addictive. It causes you to crave a smoke and suffer withdrawal symptoms if you ignore the craving.
The 2019 outbreak of EVALI cases emerged against a backdrop of an ongoing vaping epidemic among youth. The amount, quantity and toxicity of substances that e-cigarettes release depend on several factors, such as the type of device, how the device operates and is used, and the e-liquid used. Drop the Vape also directs users to the New York State Quitline for free and confidential quit-coaching via telephone, internet, and text, and free starter kits of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for eligible New Yorkers. In absence of federal law, states are acting to remove flavored nicotine products from the shelves. All the e-cigarettes previously authorized by the FDA have been tobacco, which isn’t widely used by young people who vape.

Despite the general decline in smoking, it remains more prevalent among youth with lower socio-economic position (SEP). This has been observed with family-level SEP indicators, including parental education [3, 4] and family affluence [5]as well as individual-level indicators of adulthood SEP such as academic performance [4, 5] and vocational education [6–8]. For smokeless tobacco (snus) use and electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use, the associations with SEP have been mixed [7, 9, 10]. The scientists investigated the effect of the e-liquids on cells called endothelial cells that line the interior of blood vessels.
Many people diagnosed with EVALI need to be treated in a hospital where medications can be closely monitored, and respiratory support is readily available. "I screen all of my patients, any child over age 12, since [vaping] can exacerbate underlying conditions like asthma," says Yale Medicine pediatric pulmonologist Pnina Weiss, MD. To learn more about e-cigarettes, here are resources from the American Cancer Society and the FDA. In 2022, UK experts reviewed the international evidence and found that "in the short and medium term, vaping poses a small fraction of the risks of smoking". Vapes are electronic devices that let you inhale nicotine in an aerosol, or vapour, instead of smoke. This is done by heating a solution (e-liquid) that typically contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavourings and nicotine. Vapes come in many shapes and sizes but they have the same basic components, including a battery, sensor, and atomizer/ flavor cartridge.
These devices are permitted on planes, but the FAA recently notified airlines that the lithium batteries used in these devices are fire hazards and should not be packed in checked baggage. This page may contain information that is outdated and may not reflect current policy or programs. But, CDC stats on teen smoking show that while use of e-cigs went up to 24% in 2015, cigarette smoking dropped to an historic low -- to just under 11%.
Please be advised that many of these stories contain graphic and upsetting photos of injuries. Exposure to nicotine can also rewire a young brain to become more easily addicted to other substances, including cocaine and alcohol. Even if a cartridge doesn’t contain nicotine, other harmful chemicals may be present.
The agency says companies were blocked because they couldn’t show the possible benefits for adult smokers outweighed the risk of underage use. The companies say they had prepared detailed plans to avoid appealing to young people. Vaping is the inhaling of an aerosol (mist) created by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or other vaping device. As a result of the FDA’s missed deadlines and inadequate enforcement, flavored e-cigarettes remain widely available online and in stores across the country. Every day flavored e-cigarettes remain on the market, our kids remain at risk.
Njoy is one of only three companies that previously received FDA’s OK for vaping products. Like those products, two of the Njoy menthol varieties come as cartridges that plug into a reusable device that heats liquid nicotine, turning it into an inhalable aerosol. E-cigarettes come in many shapes and sizes and can look like USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items. Larger devices, such as tank systems or "mods," do not look like other tobacco products.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has not approved any e-cigarette products as a medicine to help people quit smoking. This is because the quality and safety of e-cigarettes has not yet been thoroughly tested, and it is not clear whether they are actually helpful for people trying to quit. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or vapes) simulate the act of smoking, but you don’t burn tobacco when you use them. Instead, the e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that works by heating liquid into an aerosol, which you then inhale into your lungs. These electronic devices, also known as e-cigarettes, vapes, vape pens, personal vaporizers, e-cigars, pod systems, mods and e-hookah, are not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking. Talk with your teens about the health effects of nicotine and e-cigarettes.

As use and availability of these products increases, reports have cast more light on the health effects of e-cigarettes. Here, Kenneth Uy, a health coach at Henry Ford Health, clarifies some information about these products and how their use can impact your health.
We would argue that further studies with chronic administration of low doses of nicotine are required to clearly evaluate its impact on carcinogenicity. In this line, a study compared the acute impact of CS vs. e-cigarette vaping with equivalent nicotine content in healthy smokers and non-smokers. Both increased markers of oxidative stress and decreased NO bioavailability, flow-mediated dilation, and vitamin E levels showing no significant differences between tobacco and e-cigarette exposure (reviewed in [20]). Inasmuch, short-term e-cigarette use in healthy smokers resulted in marked impairment of endothelial function and an increase in arterial stiffness (reviewed in [20]). Similar effects on endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness were found in animals when they were exposed to e-cigarette vapor either for several days or chronically (reviewed in [20]).
Although there’s no definitive answer at this point, experts do have a theory about how vaping harms lungs. Young people who vape may be more likely to become addicted than adults. Nicotine exposure during this vital time can affect brain development in subtle and important ways. Research published in 2017 found that the high temperatures needed to form the mist for vaping can create dozens of toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, which is thought to cause cancer.
Overall, comparisons of the particle-size distribution in aerosols from e-cigarettes found that the substances tested had particle distributions similar to the traditional e-liquids containing nicotine. "Our finding indicates that health care expenditures for a person who uses e-cigarettes are $2,024 more per year than for a person who doesn’t use any tobacco products," said lead author Yingning Wang, PhD, of the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. Use of electronic cigarettes costs the United States $15 billion annually in health care expenditures – more than $2,000 per person a year – according to a study by researchers at the UC San Francisco School of Nursing. Between 2016 and 2022–2023, the proportion of people who both smoked regular (combustible) tobacco cigarettes and used e‑cigarettes increased, as did the proportion who currently used e‑cigarettes but did not use regular cigarettes.
Middle and high school students are the largest users of these smoking replacements. Recent youth tobacco surveys found e-cigarette use had surpassed conventional cigarettes as the most commonly used tobacco product among youth. These surveys also revealed that many young people consider vaping to be safe and are not aware that e-cigarettes contain nicotine. It is easy for middle school and high school students to conceal their use of vaping devices because of their appearance as everyday objects.
In January, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners passed a new ordinance that prevents new vape shops from opening within 1,000 feet of a school to address youth nicotine consumption. On the rare occasions I partake, instead of filling my nostrils with the taste of a warm crème brûlée, my mouth tastes like a street gutter for an hour. I like the nicotine, but everything else about the experience is viscerally revolting. About 43% of the study participants were LGBTQ+ adolescents, for instance, and research suggests that LGBTQ+ young people smoke and vape at a higher prevalence than their non-LGBTQ+ peers. The new study included a diverse group of adolescents, indicating how the text message program could be helpful for marginalized communities, said Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, a professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine. "Text messaging is a scalable and cost-efficient approach to delivering vaping cessation treatment on a population basis," the researchers wrote in the study.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a combination of counseling and medications as the best strategy for quitting smoking. Vaping companies have long claimed their products can help blunt the toll of smoking, which is blamed for 480,000 U.S. deaths annually due to cancer, lung disease and heart disease. The FDA has not authorized any flavored e-cigarette products and reports that it has denied marketing applications for millions of flavored products. E-cigarette companies have filed over 60 lawsuits challenging the FDA’s marketing denial orders. In addition, while the FDA denied marketing applications for all Juul products in June 2022, it subsequently put that decision on hold in the face of a lawsuit by Juul. When e-cigarette products first became popular, we didn’t have much information about health risks.
Many thousands of people in the UK have already stopped smoking with the help of an e-cigarette. An e-cigarette is a device that allows you to inhale nicotine in a vapour rather than smoke. E-cigarettes refers to the device and vaping is the use of the device.
It can’t hurt to talk with a doctor or other healthcare professional about the risks of vaping, especially if you already have a chronic health condition, such as asthma. More research needs to be done in order to understand the side effects of nicotine-free vaping. Some of these cellular changes have been linked to the development of cancer over the long term, though there’s currently no evidence to suggest that vaping causes cancer. The 2018 NAP report found substantial evidence that vaping causes cell dysfunction, oxidative stress, and damage to DNA.
Even liquid nicotine spilled on the skin can be poisonous within minutes. This resource presents an overview of key aspects of e-cigarettes, including health effects, marketing practices, and regulations based on research and evidence available at the time of publication. Since the sixties, cigarette companies, starting with Philip Morris, have freebased nicotine using ammonia, which liberates the nicotine so that it can be speedily absorbed into the lungs and the brain.
E-cigarettes are available in flavors like cherry, bubble gum, and cotton candy, and are allowed to be advertised on TV, which may increase their appeal for children and teens. As of July 31, 2024, Poison Centers have managed 4,955 e-cigarette and liquid nicotine related exposure cases. For more information about the health effects of e-cigarettes, visit CardioSmart.org/StopSmoking. People who use e-cigarettes are significantly more likely to develop heart failure compared with those who have never used them, according to one of the largest prospective studies to date investigating possible links between vaping and heart failure. The findings are being presented at the American College of Cardiology’s Annual Scientific Session.

Cumberland County Schools is implementing a national vaping and nicotine prevention program in each of its middle and high schools to try and curb rates of youth vaping. Cigarettes pushed me back to shivering outside the bar where a nicotine habit belongs.
Consequently, stricter regulation and a higher quality control in the e-liquid industry are required. The mislabelling of nicotine content in e-liquids has been previously addressed [8, 34]. Of note, several studies have detected nicotine in those e-liquids labelled as nicotine-free [5, 35, 36]. Among the 17 samples tested in this latter study 14 were identified to be counterfeit or suspected counterfeit. A third study detected nicotine in 7 of 10 nicotine-free refills, although the concentrations were lower than those identified in the previous analyses (0.1–15 µg/mL) [5].
There's no evidence so far that vaping causes harm to other people around you. If you're pregnant, licensed NRT products such as patches and gum are the recommended option to help you stop smoking. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that vaping nicotine can permanently affect brain development in people under the age of 25. The researchers concluded that vaping with and without nicotine disrupts typical lung function in otherwise healthy people. The researchers reported a number of adverse effects on both types of cells, including toxicity, oxidation, and inflammation. However, these results aren’t necessarily generalizable to vaping in real life. A 2019 study assessed data from a nationwide survey of nearly 450,000 participants and found no significant association between e-cigarette use and heart disease. The authors also described moderate evidence suggesting that taking a puff from an e-cigarette increases blood pressure.

As newer iterations brought higher levels of nicotine in an increasing array of flavors and product designs, youth use skyrocketed.
E-cigarettes may be disposable, be refillable with e-liquid, or have a prefilled cartridge or pod for reuse. Some e-cigarettes can also be used to deliver cannabis and other drugs. Additionally, high quality epidemiology studies consistently demonstrate that e-cigarettes use increases conventional cigarette uptake, particularly among non-smoking youth, by nearly 3 times. Evidence reveals that these products are harmful to health and are not safe. However, it is too early to provide a clear answer on the long-term impact of using them or being exposed to them.
Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health — smoking harms nearly every organ in your body, including your heart. Nearly one-third of deaths from heart disease are the result of smoking and secondhand smoke. The report also discusses the changing landscape of tobacco products, including smoked products, smokeless products, and e-cigarettes. The liquid solution used in e-cigarettes, sometimes called vape juice or e-liquid, usually contains nicotine and other chemicals.
However, when they looked at other scenarios, such as bar settings where many people were vaping, the researchers found that the concentration of toxins in the air was generally much higher than in residential settings. The more people were vaping and the higher voltages were used, the worse the air quality. In some scenarios, levels of both formaldehyde and acrolein were above OEHHA safety standards for bar employees. This article explains the toxins found in vaping aerosol, the factors affecting secondhand vaping, and potential health effects. The survey also found that Minnesota youth are ill-informed about the health risks of e-cigarettes with 76.1% of 11th graders saying there is either no, slight, or a moderate risk to using e-cigarettes. 11th grade students responding to the student survey said that the top ways they got e-cigarettes included getting products from friends (72.3%), getting products at a vape shop (14.0%), and on the Internet (9.6%). Among 8th grade students, e-cigarette use nearly doubled from 2016 to 2019, and one in four 11th graders now use e-cigarettes. Students in all grades surveyed now use e-cigarettes and vapes at five times the rate of conventional cigarettes. In Australia, during the survey period, it was not legal to obtain e‑cigarettes containing nicotine without a prescription (TGA 2020).
In smoking and school disengagement (e.g. truancy), students often choose to affiliate with similar peers [28, 29]. Smoking prevalence has been lower in schools where educational attainment and attendance are better than predicted based on student socio-demographic factors, indicating the importance of positive school ethos [30]. Yet, other school-level factors than school connectedness [22] have rarely been studied in connection with susceptibility. Youth use of e-cigarettes has surpassed youth use of regular combustible cigarettes in Delaware. Approximately 38 percent of Delaware high school students reported ever trying an electronic vapor product. Finally, the researchers compared the levels of nicotine in the blood serum of people after they had vaped e-cigarettes with the levels in people who smoked traditional cigarettes.
At that point, levels of formaldehyde exceeded limits set by the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), though other compounds didn’t come close. About a quarter of middle and high school students surveyed in 2017 said they had been around someone vaping at least once in the past 30 days. In 2021, only about 11 percent of high school students and 3 percent of middle school students surveyed said they had tried e-cigarettes. Results from a clinical trial published by JAMA Internal Medicine found that young adults ages who used This is Quitting from Truth had nearly 40% higher odds of quitting compared to a control group.
